THE USE OF PROBLEM SOLVING LEARNING METHOD TO IMPROVE STUDENTS’ CRITICAL THINKING
Abstract
Students' critical thinking skill can be developed through the learning process using the Problem Solving model. The problem in this study is how the use of Problem Solving learning method can improve students’ critical thinking skill in class V in social science subject. The purpose of this study was to find out the improvement of the students’ critical thinking ability after using the Problem Solving Learning Method at class V SDN Rancagoong in Cilaku Subdistrict of Cianjur Regency. The method used in this study is the Classroom Action Research (CAR) using the Kemmis Taggart model. The study was conducted in two cycles, each of which consisted of two actions. Subjects in this study were 31 class V students. Data collection techniques are carried out using observation sheets, field notes, interview sheets, evaluation and documentation. From the learning results obtained each cycle has increased. In the action 1 of cycle I obtained a score of 54.69%, then increased in action 2 to 67.19%, and in cycle II action 1 and 2 became 81.81% and 87.50%, then students’ activity increased in cycle I action 1, 2 which was 45.45% and 61.36% then increased in cycle II actions 1 and 2 to be 77.27% and 90.91%, then the critical thinking ability increased in the cycle I with 18 students were accomplished not 13 students were not accomplished while the results of the cycle II were 30 students accomplished and only 1 student who were not, with an average score of 65.81 and cycle II to be 79.76. Thus it can be concluded that the use of problem solving model can improve students’ critical thinking skill at class V SDN Rancagoong, Cilaku Subdistrict, Cianjur Regency.

Keterampilan berpikir kritis siswa dapat dikembangan melalui proses pembelajaran dengan menggunakan model Problem Solving. Adapun masalah dalam penelitian ini yaitu bagaimana penggunaan metode pembelajaran Problem Solving dapat meningkatkan kemampuan berpikir kritis siswa di kelas V dalam pembelajaran IPS. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui peningkatan kemampuan berpikir kritis siswa setelah menggunakan Metode Pembelajaran Problem Solving di kelas V SDN Rancagoong Kecamatan Cilaku Kabupaten Cianjur. Metode yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah metode Penelitian Tindakan Kelas (PTK) dengan menggunakan model Kemmis Taggart. Penelitian ini dilaksanakan dalam dua siklus, yang setiap siklusnya terdiri dari dua tindakan. Subjek dalam penelitian ini yaitu siswa kelas V yang berjumlah 31 orang siswa. Teknik pengumpulan data dilakukan dengan menggunakan lembar observasi, catatan lapangan, lembar wawancara, evaluasi dan dokumentasi. Dari hasil belajar yang diperoleh setiap siklus mengalami peningkatan. Siklus I tindakan 1 memperoleh skor 54,69%, kemudian meningkat pada tindakan 2 menjadi 67,19%, dan pada siklus II tindakan 1 dan 2 menjadi 81,81% dan 87,50%, kemudian kegiatan siswa meningkat siklus I tindakan 1, 2 yaitu sebesar 45,45% dan 61,36% meningkat pada siklus II tindakan 1 dan 2 menjadi 77,27% dan 90,91%, kemudian kemampuan berpikir kritis siswa meningkat pula siklus I tuntas 18 orang tidak tuntas 13 orang sedangkan pada siklus II tuntas 30 orang dan yang tidak tuntas 1 orang, dengan skor rata-rata siklus I 65,81 dan siklus II menjadi 79,76. Dengan demikian dapat disimpulkan bahwa penggunaan model problem solving dapat meningkatkan kemampuan berpikir kritis siswa di kelas V SDN Rancagoong Kecamatan Cilaku Kabupaten Cianjur.
